What Are Optomap® Retinal Exams? 

The Optomap® is a digital image of the retina produced by Optos scanning laser technology. It is currently the only technology that can capture an 82-percent view of the retina at one time. Much like film in a camera, the retina is the part of your eye that catches the image of what you’re looking at. When your doctor examines your retina, they gain valuable insights about your eye health and the possible presence of eye disease.  

An Optomap® retinal exam provides: 

• A scan to confirm a healthy eye or detect the presence of disease 
• Early detection of various eye diseases that, if left unchecked, may lead to vision loss 
• An overview (map) of the retina that provides a detailed view to your doctor 

Before undergoing an Optomap® retinal exam, your eye doctor at EyeQ Family Optical will first perform a comprehensive eye exam to gain a better picture of your eye health. This exam includes various tests and screenings to determine the state of your vision and any potential issues that may need to be addressed. At this exam, your doctor will determine if an Optomap® exam may be a helpful step for you. 

Taking an Optomap® Image 

Taking an Optomap® image is quick, pain-free, and comfortable. No equipment touches your eye, making it suitable for individuals of all ages, even children. You will begin by looking into the imaging device one eye at a time. You will then see a flash of light, which lets you know that the image has been taken.  

Because the image is available right away, you will have the opportunity to review and discuss your Optomap® images with your doctor at the time of your eye exam. Your doctor will note any areas of concern. A record of the image will also be kept in your medical file, giving your optometrist the opportunity to make comparisons between images if potential issues arise at future exams.
